Idea & Block-Out
Every great asset begins with a solid foundation. In the block-out phase, I used Maya to quickly establish the basic shape and proportions of the windmill. This step focused on exploring form and composition—laying down simple geometry to define the overall structure. It was essential for experimenting with scale and spatial relationships, ensuring the whimsical yet functional design of the prop was well-conceived before delving into the details.
High Resolution Sculpt
With the block-out complete, I transitioned into the high-resolution phase using Blender for detailed sculpting. This stage involved creating a high poly model where every nuance was meticulously crafted. From the texture of the wooden sticks to the delicate contours of the leaves and the intricate details on the pinwheel, the high-res sculpt captured the essence of the design. This step was critical in defining the character and feel of the prop, ensuring it retained both charm and a touch of realism within its stylized framework.

Low Res / Baking Textures
After perfecting the high-res model, the next step was to optimize the asset for performance. I created a low poly version of the windmill and then baked the fine details from the high-res sculpt onto it. Techniques like normal mapping and ambient occlusion baking were used to preserve the intricate textures while reducing the polygon count. Careful UV unwrapping ensured that every nuance from the high-res model was effectively transferred, maintaining the artistic flair without compromising efficiency.
Painting
The painting phase is where the asset truly comes to life. For this project, I used Substance Painter to hand-paint the textures. This tool allowed me to apply vibrant colors and subtle shading, emphasizing the stylized nature of the windmill. With Substance Painter, I was able to blend various texture layers seamlessly—enhancing everything from the weathered look of the wood to the natural hues of the leaves and the pinwheel. This process imbued the prop with personality and depth, reinforcing the unique artistic vision behind the project.

Result
The final result is a miniature windmill prop that tells its own story. Presented inside Unity, the asset comes to life with dynamic lighting and an atmospheric scene. The integration within Unity not only highlights the fine details of the hand-painted textures but also breathes light and life into the entire project. Giant grass blades and scattered, rotting maple leaves set the stage, enriching the scene with a sense of natural decay and whimsical charm.
